Summary:Relations between microstructure, dielectric breakdown and trapping of charges in alumina ceramics were investigated. In order to study the influence of microstructural parameters on the dielectric strength, single crystals, pure polycrystalline alumina samples and alumina ceramics with an inter- and intragranular secondary phase (zirconia) have been subjected to alternative current breakdown tests at room temperature. This work shows the dielectric strength is affected by purity of alumina powders, porosity, grain size and the presence of a fine dispersed secondary phase. These first results are discussed according to the theory of trapping-detrapping of charges.
