Summary:The Brazilian Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory has been operating the only light source in the southern hemisphere since July 1997. Over this 6 year period, approximately 17000 hours of beam time were delivered to more than 600 users from all over Brazil as well as from 10 other countries. In this article, we report on the present configuration of the 1.37 GeV electron storage ring and associated instrumentation, describe recent improvements to the light source and the 11 installed beamlines and analyze future prespectives including the installation of insertion devices.
