Summary: | conservation biology is a crisis discipline rooted in the realization that the world’s biodiversity is rapidly disappearing. Environmental problems (including loss of species and ecosystems) are mainly the result of explosive human population growth, with an ever-growing demand on natural resources and a steady increase in waste products. Minimizing the negative effects of human activities on the envi-ronment requires a conservation-minded culture, an adequate legal framework that is implemented and enforced, properly trained professionals, and fund-ing. Just as important, minimizing environmental damage requires solid scientific information on the biodiversity and functioning of every ecosystem and on conservation threats at a local, regional, and global scale. |
