미디어에서 재현된 여성의 ‘몸’에 대한 재사유 - 넷플릭스 〈사이렌 : 불의 섬〉을 중심으로

미디어는 여성의 몸을 ‘응시의 대상’으로 전시하며, 여성의 몸은 연약하고 날씬한 ‘유순한 몸’이 이상적이라는 지배적 담론을 확산하고 재생산하는 데 있어서 주요한 역할을 해왔다. 이런 가운데 본 연구는 여성주의 서사로 주목을 받았던 넷플릭스 <사이렌 : 불의 섬>의 서사 분석을 통해 미디어가 여성의 몸을 어떻게 재현하고 의미화하는지 그 변화를 추적하고 정치적 함의에 대해 논의하고자 하였다. 분석 결과, 남성 우위의 6개 직업군에 종사하는 24명의 여성들은 근육질의 뛰어난 신체적 기량을 다투며 지배 권력이 선호하는 ‘유순한 몸’이 아닌 ‘강인한 몸’을 가진 적극적인 주체로서 자신들을 호명하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 팀 경기를 통해 자기희생과 상대방에 대한 배려 등 끈끈한 자매애와 여성 연대의 가능성을 보여주었다. 이 연구는 미디어가 지배적 담론에 대한 균열과 재정의 등을 통해 사회적 변화에 있어 하나의 촉매로 기능할 수 있으며, 여성을 능동적이고 영향력 있는 개별 주체로 묘사함으로써 대안적인 서사의 가능성을 열고 억압적인 젠더 규범에 도전할 수 있음을 보여준다. The media has played a major role in spreading and reproducing dominant discourse that the ideal women's bodies are frail, slender, and 'docile' by displaying women's bodies as 'objects of gaze'. Through a narrative analysis of Netflix's <Siren: Survive the Island>, which has attracted attention for its feminist narrative, this study aims to trace the changes in how media represent and signify women's bodies and femininity, and discuss its political implications. The analysis revealed that 24 women in six male-dominated professions compete for muscular and athletic prowess, presenting themselves as active subjects with "strong bodies" rather than the "docile bodies" favored by the ruling class, and demonstrate the potential for sisterhood and female solidarity through team competition, including self-sacrifice and consideration for each other. This analysis suggests that media can act as a catalyst for social change, disrupting and redefining dominant discourses. By portraying women as active and powerful individuals, it opens up possibilities for alternative narratives and challenges oppressive gender norms. KCI Citation Count: 0
