공과대학 학생들의 교양영어 수업에 대한 인식 및 만족도 연구

지방 A대학의 창의공과대학의 다섯 개 학과의 학생들을 대상으로 현재 진행되고 있는 교양영어 교육과정에 대한 인식과 만족도를 설문지를 통해 조사하였다. 총 5개 학과의 166명의 학생들이 본 설문에 참여 하였으며, 설문지는 참여자의 일반적인 특성, 교양영어 수강동기, 교양영어 수업 만족도, 교양영어 수업에 대한 태도, 교양영어 수업의 개선점의 항목으로 이루어 져 있으며 수집된 설문지는 수강 동기에 전공별 어떠한 차이가 있으며, 수업의 만족도 및 태도는 교양영어 수업별 차이와 전공별 차이가 있는지, 전공별 제안하는 교양영어 개선점에는 어떠한 차이가 있는지에 따라 분석하였다. 설문조사 결과 모든 전공에서 교양영어 수업을 수강하는 동기는 필수 학점이기 때문이라는 답이 가장 높게 나왔으며 또한 자신의 영어 능력 향상을 위해 수강한다는 문항도 비교적 높게 나왔다. 또한 필수학점임에도 불구하고 교양영어 수업에 대한 만족도 역시 높게 나타났으며, 교양영어 수업중 원어민 교수가 진행하는 영어회화 수업보다 한국인 교수가 진행하는 대학영어 수업의 만족도가 조금 높게 나타났으나 전공별 통계적 유의미한 차이를 보이지는 않았다. 개선점으로는 다양한 교양영어 수업이 필요하며, 교양영어 수업 교수진으로는 많은 학생들이 한국인 교수진을 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 추후 효과적인 교양영어 수업이 이루어지기 위해서는 다양한 수업이 개설되어 학생들의 수업 선택권이 다양화 될 수 있도록 할 필요가 있으며, 영어회화 수강에 앞서 기초영어 학습이 선행된 후 수강할 수 있도록 교육과정의 보완이 필요할 것으로 보인다. The purpose of this study is to examine students’ perception and satisfaction on general English programs at the college level. Total 166 students from five different engineering majors including Architecture, Mechanical, Urban, Smart Automotive, Electronic Engineering were participated in the survey after completing one year of general English programs. The students completed the survey related to general characteristics of the student, the purpose of taking the class, satisfaction and attitude toward the class and suggestion for improvement. The results were analyzed by the survey’s categories, students’ majors to verify the differences within majors and classes which were Academic reading conducted by Korean professors and English conversation conducted by Native English speakers. Overall statistic results did not show the significant difference within the majors. However, the satisfaction for Academic reading was slightly higher than English conversation because students were still afraid of speaking English with a foreigner. The results showed students preferred to have Korean professors in general English classroom but did not agree with expanding class hours. The students suggested the necessity of a variety of class subject in general English programs including the classes that helped to raise the TOEIC or other tests’ scores. Also the university needed to reform the general English program in the way that the participant can develop their English skill to actively participate in English conversation class.
