선교사 루이즈 맥컬리(Louise H. McCully)의 연합 정신

본 논문은 캐나다장로교회 파송 선교사 루이즈 맥컬리(Louise H. McCully, 1864-1945)의 선교 사역이 일관성 있게 연합지향적이었음을 조명하는 데 목적이 있다. 마르다 윌슨 여자 신학원 사역, 함남여전도회 구성으로부터 여전도회전국연합회 창설 등 그의 굵직한 선교 사역 안에서 연합의 정신을 발견해내고, 그가 연합을 고수했던 궁극적인 목표가 복음 전파에 있었음을 확인하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 먼저 루이즈 맥컬리가 한국에서 했던 많은 사역들 중 마르다 윌슨 여자 신학원의 설립과 활동, 함흥과 원산 지역의 여전도회 활동, 그리고 여전도회전국연합회 창설을 위한 준비 과정을 구체적으로 살펴볼 것이다. 다음, 교회연합활동, 남감리교 선교부와의 연합활동, 교회여성들의 연합활동 등의 예들을 통하여 루이즈의 선교 사역을 연합 정신의 관점에서 파악할 것이다. 마지막으로 그가 끝까지 놓지 않았던 연합 정신이 궁극적으로 시급한 복음 전파를 위한 것이었음을 확인할 것이다. 분열과 대립이 가득한 이때에 루이즈의 사역을 통하여 교회 내 연합의 의미가 무엇인지를 고민하고자 한다. This paper examines the unwavering focus on unity in the missionary work of Louise H. McCully (1864–1945), a missionary sent by the Presbyterian Church in Canada. Through her significant contributions—including her ministry at Martha Wilson Memorial Women’s Theological Training School, the formation of the Women’s Missionary Society in the Presbyterian Church of South Hamgyong Province, and the establishment of the General Assembly of Women’s Missionary Societies in the Presbyterian Church of Korea—this study reveals the spirit of unity that permeated her efforts. Her dedication to unity was ultimately driven by her commitment to spreading the gospel. The study explores McCully’s various ministries in Korea, focusing on the founding and operation of the Martha Wilson Memorial Women’s Theological Training School, the activities of the Women’s Missionary Societies in the Hamheung and Wonsan regions, and the groundwork for establishing the General Assembly of Women’s Missionary Societies in the Presbyterian Church of Korea. It examines her missionary efforts through the lens of unity, highlighting instances of church unification, collaboration with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and joint activities among churchwomen. Ultimately, this paper demonstrates that McCully’s enduring commitment to unity served the urgent cause of gospel propagation. In an era marked by division and conflict, her ministry invites us to reflect on the true meaning of unity within the church. KCI Citation Count: 0
