여우 소재의 활용 양상과 문화콘텐츠로서의 가능성 - 드라마 〈구미호뎐(2020)〉을 중심으로

본 연구는 드라마 <구미호뎐(2020>을 중심으로 전통적인 여우 소재의 현대 대중매체 속 활용 양상을 살펴봄으로써 여우 소재의 문화콘텐츠로서의 가능성을 논의한 것이다. 이러한 논의를 위해 본고는 드라마에 수용된 여우 소재의 설화적 원천과 현대적 변용을 중심으로 분석하고 이를 토대로 여우 소재의 위상에 대해 논의하였다. 먼저 설화적 원천의 경우 <구미호뎐>의 중심 서사는 ‘용사(龍蛇) 설화’의 하위 유형인 <두꺼비의 보은담> 구조와 흡사하였다. 더불어 여우와 인간의 긴밀한 관계를 상징하는 여우 구슬의 설정은 <여우구슬> 설화에서 연원한 것이었다. 다음으로 현대적 변용의 경우 인물 형상화의 특징과 주제적 의미의 두 측면에서 살펴보았다. <구미호뎐>은 관습적으로 여성으로 성별화되던 구미호를 남성으로 바꾸고 주인공인 구미호 형제 각각에 현대의 히어로물에서 각광받는 영웅과 반영웅의 성격을 접목시켰다. 주제적 의미의 측면에서 볼 때, <구미호뎐>은 구미호 형제의 희생을 통해 인간과 여우라는 이류(異類)의 지고지순한 사랑 및 이류들로 구성된 대안 가족의 가치를 구현하였다. 여우 소재가 지닌 위상은 고전 서사로부터 현대의 대중매체에 이르기까지 문화 향유층이 지속적이면서 가장 빈번하게 여우 소재를 통해 당대의 관심사를 표현해왔다는 데에서 찾을 수 있었다. 여우 소재의 활용 방식은 인간과 사회의 이면을 폭로하면서도 인간 남성 중심의 질서를 수호하려는 의식지향으로부터, <구미호뎐>에 이르러서는 여우와 인간의 공존을 통해 현대 사회의 주요 화두인 다문화의 가치를 전달하는 데까지 확장되었다. 이처럼 전통적인 여우 소재는 시대와 조응하면서 재해석될 가능성이 풍부한 대표적인 고전 콘텐츠임이 재삼 확인된다. This study discussed the possibility of fox materials as cultural content by examining the utilization patterns of traditional fox materials in modern mass media, focusing on the drama <Tale of the Nine-Tailed Fox (2020>). To achieve this goal, this study discussed the fox materials accepted in the drama. The analysis focused on the narrative source and modern transformation of and based on this, the status of the fox material was discussed. First, in the case of the narrative source, the central narrative of <The Tale of the Nine-Tailed Tiger> was similar to the structure of <The story of the toad who returned the favor>, a subtype of the ‘dragon and snake tale’. In addition, the setting of the fox bead, which symbolizes the close relationship between foxes and humans, originated from the folktale <Fox Bead>. Next, the modern transformation was examined from two aspects: the characteristics of character formation and thematic meaning. <Tale of the Nine-Tailed Fox> changed the nine-tailed fox, which was conventionally gendered as female, to male, and then incorporated the characteristics of heroes and anti-heroes, which are in the spotlight in modern hero films. In terms of thematic meaning, <Tale of the Nine-Tailed Fox> embodies the values of the noble love between humans and foxes and the alternative family composed of humans and foxes through the sacrifice of the nine-tailed fox brothers. The status of fox material can be found in the fact that, from classical narratives to modern mass media, cultural audiences have commonly expressed contemporary interests through fox material. The use of fox material has expanded from the pattern of being ousted by the male-centered order to conveying the value of multiculturalism through the coexistence of foxes and humans through <The Tale of the Nine-Tailed Fox>. In this way, it has been confirmed once again that the traditional fox material is a representative classic content with great potential for reinterpretation in keeping with the times.
