굿맨의 ‘세계 제작’에 대한 쉐플러의 잘못된 비판 : 다원적 실재론을 전제로 한 비판

쉐플러는 다원적 실재론을 옹호하면서 굿맨의 입장을 비판한다. 쉐플러와 굿맨 사이의 긴 논쟁의 흐름을 잘 살펴보면 쉐플러가 자신의 다원적 실재론을 전제로 하고 비판하고 있다는 것을 발견하게 된다. 그의 다원적 실재론은 옹호하기 어려운 입장이므로 그것을 기반으로 한 굿맨에 대한 비판을 받아들이기 어렵다고 생각된다. 본 논문의 1절에서 필자는 굿맨의 다원적 비실재론과 쉐플러의 다원적 실재론을 간단히 소개한다. 2절에서 필자는 쉐플러가 굿맨의 ‘세계’라는 개념을 오해하고 있다는 점을 지적하고자 한다. 3절에서는 굿맨이 ‘세계 제작’를 옹호하는 세 가지 근거를 제시하며 각 근거에 대한 쉐플러의 비판을 검토한다. 4절에서 필자는 인식할 수 없는 세계에 대해 굿맨의 입장은 일관성이 있으나 쉐플러의 입장은 그렇지 못하다는 것을 논증한다. 그리고 쉐플러는 실재론적 주장에 대해 제대로 된 근거 제시하고 있지 못하므로 그것을 전제로 한 굿맨의 비판은 실패한다는 점을 논증한다. There are two positions on the way the world is: Peirce’s Monic Realism and Goodman’s Plural Irrealism. Scheffler criticizes Goodman’s position, defending on the third position, plural irrealism. Scheffler criticizes Goodman on the premise of his plural realism, considering the long discussion between Goodman and Scheffler, I think that his criticism is untenable since his plural realism is untenable. In section 1, I present Goodman’s plural irrealism and Scheffler’s plural realism. In section 2, I argue that Scheffler misunderstands what Goodman means by ‘world’. In section 3, I present three reasons for defending Goodman’s ‘worldmaking’ and examine Scheffler’s comments. Their difference leads to the problem, whether a world, which is not cognitively accessible, exists or not. In section 4, I argue that Goodman’s position is coherent while Scheffler’s is not. I also argue that Scheffler’s criticism on Goodman fails since the realistic premise is not well supported. KCI Citation Count: 1
