Summary:Objectives: This study aimed to longitudinally investigate the intergenerational transmission of self-esteem in early school-aged children. Based on the family systems theory, we examined the role of family interactions as a possible mediator. Methods: This study used data from Waves 8, 9, and 10 of the Panel Study on Korean Children. The study sample consisted of 1,665 first grade to third grade children in elementary school at Wave 8. The measures used in the study included parental self-esteem at Wave 8, family interactions at Wave 9, and children’s self-esteem at Wave 10. We first confirmed the measurement model using confirmatory factor analysis and proved the research model using structural equation modeling. Results: Parental higher self-esteem predicted more balanced family interactions in the subsequent year. Balanced family interactions predicted children’s higher self-esteem the year after. Sobel tests verified the mediation effect of family interactions between parents’ and children’s self-esteem. Conclusion: The results tap into the gap in previous literature by clarifying the causal mechanism of the intergenerational transmission of self-esteem using longitudinal data. They also provide empirical evidence for the role of family interactions in the intergenerational transmission of self-esteem. KCI Citation Count: 1
