윤동주 평전의 질료와 빈 곳 - 윤동주와 박치우의 서신, 그 새로운 사실과 전망

이 논문은 윤동주가 박치우로부터 받은 엽서를 최초로 소개하고 이를 통해 윤동주의 생애와 시를 이해하는 새로운 가능성을 모색하고자 한다. 윤동주 평전은 시인의 유품과 관계자들의 증언이라는 귀한 질료를 기반으로 했음에도 불구하고, 대부분 용정과 연희전문의 시공간에 집중되어 있고 복원되지 못하는 시간, 장소, 관계들이 남아 있었다. 1941년 윤동주가 박치우로부터 받은 엽서는 그가 평양 숭실학교를 거쳐 경성 연희전문학교로 진출하고, 『조선일보』 학예면에 투고하고, 저항적 의미로서 생명을 끌어안는 시에 도달하게 되는 과정을 이해하는 데에 도움을 준다. 고전철학에서부터 현대철학까지 아우르면서 파시즘 대항논리로서 유물론에 주목했던 1세대 경성제대 서양철학인 박치우라는 인물과의 관계는 윤동주가 연희전문의 문과생들이나 동급생들과만 교류하거나 문학에만 침전하지 않고 보다 폭넓은 교류와 사상적 저변을 확보하고 있었을 가능성을 열어준다. 유품을 새롭게 발굴하여 소개하는 것은 평전을 보완하고 연구를 확장시킬 수 있다는 점에서 의미 있다. 하지만 한 장의 엽서의 의미를 과장하거나 이데올로기적으로 단순화해서 재단하는 것은 경계하며, 윤동주의 삶과 시의 다층적인 결을 풍부히 밝히는 데에 기여되어야 할 것이다. 윤동주와 한 서양 철학자와의 만남에 대한 실증적인 규명을 통해 윤동주를 재단해온 순수-저항, 친일-항일, 반공-친공의 이분법적 구도에서 벗어나 한국 근대 지성사의 맥락 속에서 그의 시세계가 규명되기를 희망한다. This paper introduces, for the first time ever, Park Chiwoo’s postcard to Yoon Dongju and seeks to find new possibilities for understanding the life and poetry of Yoon. Although critical biographies of Yoon are based on rare source materials such as the poet’s possessions and testimonies from friends and family, they are concentrated on his Yongjeong Bukgando and Yonhui College years. There are still many times, places, and relationships that the biographies cannot restore. Park’s 1941 postcard helps elucidate the trajectory of Yoon’s life: how he went from Soongsil Academy in Pyongyang to Yonhui College in Gyeongseong, how he came to submit his writing to the literary pages of Joseon Ilbo, and how he came to write poetry that embraced a life of resistance. Park Chiwoo was among the first generation of philosophers from Keijō Imperial University. His knowledge spanned from classical to modern philosophy, and included a focus on materialism as a counter logic to fascism. Yun’s relationship with such a figure opens up the possibility that Yun himself had extensive exchanges beyond those with students in liberal arts or his own class, and that he had established a broad ideological base rather than immersing himself in literature. The introduction of the newly discovered postcard is meaningful in that it enables critics to add to Yun’s biography and expand their studies. However, it is necessary to be cautious of exaggerating the significance of a single postcard or making judgments based on simplified ideology. The postcard should instead contribute to revealing more fully the multilayered aspects of Yun’s life and poetry. Substantive inquiry into the meeting between Yun and a scholar of Western philosophy will hopefully take critical studies beyond the dichotomy of innocence-resistance, pro-anti Japanese sentiment, or pro-anti Communism, and lead to examinations of Yun’s poetry within the context of modern Korean intellectual history.
