한국언론학 개척자 임근수 박사의 학문적 생애와 업적

이 논문은 우리나라 언론학의 4비조 중 한명으로 특히 언론사 연구분야의 개척자였던 희관 임근수 박사 서거 40주년을 맞아 그의 학문적 생애와 업적을 간단히 살펴본 뒤에, 언론사에 대한 그의 연구목적과 사관, 연구입장, 연구방법 및 그가 우리나라 언론사 내 지 커뮤니케이션사 연구의 발전에 끼친 공헌 등을 조명해 보고자 것이었다. 희관 임근수 박사는 이 땅에 ‘언론학’이라는 새로운 학문분야를 탄생시키고 발전시키는데 주역을 담당하였다. 또한 그는 여러 권의 저서와 40여 편의 논문들을 발표하면서 우리나라에 서 언론학의 방향, 과제, 연구방법 등을 제시해 줌으로써 우리나라 언론학 연구의 발전 에 크게 기여했다. 그는 특히 커뮤니케이션사 연구의 선도자이자 대표적 학자로서 크게 공헌했다. 첫째 그는 언론사 연구대상을 신문사에서부터 매스 커뮤니케이션사로, 다시 커뮤니케이션사로 확대발전시켜 주었다. 둘째로 커뮤니케이션사의 연구범위도 종래의 송신자 중심의 연구에서 탈피해서 메시지와 그 전달과정, 수용자, 효과 분석 등 커뮤니케이션 과정 전반에 관한 역사적 연구로 확대, 발전시켜 주었다. 셋째로 커뮤니케이션 사의 연구 범위를 공간적 즉 지역적으로도 넓혀서 우리나라 언론학도들의 시야를 넓혀 주었다. 넷째로 우리나라 커뮤니케이션사 연구에서 사관정립을 위하여 신민족주의 사 관을 제시해 주었다. 다섯째로 우리나라 커뮤니케이션사의 시대·시기를 어떻게 구분 해야 할 것인지도 제시해 주었다. 여섯째로 커뮤니케이션사 연구방법으로 사회학적 연구방법도 제시해 주었다. This paper is to commemorate the 40th demise anniversary of Professor Lim Keun-soo, one of the famous forerunners of communication studies and education in Korea. It is, however, not merely to honor him but to learn from him academic spirit and viewpoint, studious attitude, intellectuality, scientific knowledge and methods and so on, which play significant roles in studying communication. In this paper, therefore, more than forty scholarly publications of Dr. Lim were reviewed and analyzed elaborately. In result, it revealed that Dr. Lim left behind remarkable academic achievements and made valuable contributions especially to the studies of Korean communication history. Among the major contributions to Korean communicationn studies are to (1) expanding its subject from newspaper history to all kinds of media communication history; (2) scaling up its status from communicator-centered history to communication process-centered comprehensive history; (3) building up or establishing the historical view of communication history by suggesting Son Jin-Tae’s New Nationalism; (4) making periodization of Korean communication history into period, age, era and (5) applying and implementing sociological approach to the research of communication history.
