Summary:The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of adolescents’ emotional intelligence and interpersonal stress coping on loneliness in path model using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The subjects were 220 adolescents who were students at middle schools or high schools in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Province. Questionnaires, which required self-reporting by the adolescents, were used to investigate emotional intelligence, interpersonal stress coping, and loneliness. The collected data were analyzed by Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), Bootstrapping, Pearson Correlation, AMOS 10.0, and SPSS 21.0. The results of this study were as follows. First, adolescents" emotional intelligence had a negative influence on loneliness. Second, adolescents" interpersonal stress coping had a negative influence on loneliness. In interpersonal stress situations, adolescents used problem focused coping more than emotion focused coping. Third, adolescents" emotional intelligence had a positive influence on interpersonal stress coping. Fourth, emotional intelligence had an indirect effect on loneliness via interpersonal stress coping. The results mean emotional intelligence had more of an influence on adolescents" loneliness than interpersonal stress coping did. Therefore, improving the ability to recognize emotions in self and others, understanding their effect, and to use that knowledge to guide thoughts and behaviors helps to prevent loneliness in adolescents.
