Summary: | This paper aims to investigate and record the place-names in Yongchon-ri. I reexamined the existing records and performed fieldwork to collect the missing ones in the records. Place-names consist of two components: the front component and the rear component. In general, while the rear component refers to an object name such as village, valley, mountain-pass, field, etc., the front component indicates the geographical feature or historical event of an object. My findings show that except ‘Golmal’, most village names do not have any rear component. In the case of valley names, the front component reflects either an object which existed there before, or reflects a geographical feature. The front component of the mountain-pass names refers to an object existed there, a physical shape of the mountain-pass, a village or valley name near the mountain-pass. For field names, the front component represents a nearby village name or geographical feature of the field. ‘Deul’, ‘Bada’, ‘Gure’, ‘Daraeng-i’, or ‘Baemi’ is appeared in the rear component. In the case of mountain peaks, the front component reflects an event performed in the mountain before or reflects a shape of the peak. A few pure Korean vocabulary such as ‘Den, Gol, Bang-u, Hanumul, Barak, Mae, Ppaenae, Honggae, Gal, Daraeng-i, Gure’ still remain in the place-names of Yongchon-ri. This field research of place-names is very important to record cultural or linguistic heritages of a country. KCI Citation Count: 1 |
