Summary: | This study was intended to explore Korean linguistic characteristics shown in quotations by discussing quotations commonly employed in Korean news discourse. In particular, rhetorical quotations and nominal predicate constructions are selected for this study. The former refers to a type of quotation that appears to be a direct quotation because of its quotation marks, but its contents equal those of an indirect quotation. The rhetorical quotation is very widely used in Korean news discourse, because of its effects of vividness, economy, truthfulness and rhetorical variation. On the other hand, the latter means the construction where a complement noun and a copula are combined. The copula in this construction is a one-place predicate, which takes only one argument, i.e., a complement noun, where its subject raises to the matrix subject position. The complement noun in the construction retains its nominality, compared to verbal nouns which takes a light verb hata. The authors of this study believe that this study is unique, considering the fact that unlike previous studies, this study more specifically attended unique characteristics of genres in Korean news discourse.
