후안 호세 미야스 작품을 통해서 본 “성(性)의 변신”

인간은 누구나 남녀로 나누어진 두 가지 성(性) 중의 하나를 가지고 있다. 이는 순전히 우연적으로 부여된 정체성으로 이름, 국적 등과 같이 후천적으로 결정되는 정체성과는 다르게 마음대로 바꾸기 힘들다. 물론 성전환수술과 같은 현대의학의 발전된 기술로서 성의 변신을 성취할 수 있다고는 하나 그 변신은 불완전한 것으로 여겨진다. 스페인 현대 작가인 후안 호세 미야스 Juan José Millás는 그의 작품 속에서 남성과 여성의 정체성을 교환시킨다. 남성 작가인 작가 자신이 여성의 시점을 빌려 소설을 이끌어 나가기도 하고 남성 주인공이 카프카의 『변신』의 주인공처럼 갑자기 여성으로 변하기도 한다. 갑자기 변하는 경우 자신의 성기가 없어지거나 경험하지 못한 다른 종류의 성적 흥분을 느끼는 등 그 변화가 직접적이고 물리적이다. 그리고 짝과의 성별이 바뀌는 경우도 있는데 이 변화는 주로 심리적인 변화를 동반한다. 그리고 남성주인공이 자신의 어머니로 변신하기도 하는데 어머니로 바뀌는 경우 아버지를 죽이고 어머니를 취하는 오이디푸스 콤플렉스를 넘어서 어머니로의 변신을 이루기도 하는 것이다. 그리고 작가는 이런 모든 총체적인 성의 변신을 단편 「대중역학 La mecánica popular」에서 보여준다. 거기서 그는 다른 경계의 파괴와 함께 성의 경계파괴로 인한 성의 변신을 여러 차례 드러낸다. 미야스는 결국 여러 가지 개념들의 경계파괴와 함께 우리가 굳건하다고 믿는 성 정체성의 경계마저 파괴하는 것이고 그것은 또 우리가 허구의 산물인 소설을 읽는 주요 목적 중 하나인 타인이 되고자하는 호기심과 욕망을 보여주는 것이라 할 수 있다. Commonly, an individual human being has only one sexual identity divided between man and woman which come into being spontaneously. A sexual and one fixed identity is quite different character and unchangeable compared with name, or nationality just liked acquired ones. Currently, even we accept the changeable character with a sex exchange operation balanced with advance of modern medical science, however, it still regard it as imperfect one. Juan José Millás, a modern Spanish writer, exchanges men's identity for women's identity in his works. Although he is a male writer, he is often saying in a female's voice and sometimes male main characters suddenly change into women as a main character in The Metamophosis of Franz Kafka. When they change, their penises disappear or they feel new kinds of sexual excitement, which is physical and direct. And sometimes a person changes into his partner, this kind of change accompanies mental change. Main male characters become their own mothers, and it shows the extension of an Oedipus complex. The writer shows total sexual makeover in his work, La mecánica popular. He reveals sexual changes from boundary destruction along with identity destruction. Millás destructs lots of boundaries that are believed to be firm including sexual identity. This shows curiosity and desire to be another person, which is a main purpose of reading fictions.
