Summary: | A nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve has a reported incidence of 0.3 to 1.6%, and they mainly occur on the right side of neck during thyroidectomy. We experienced a case of nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve during surgery for papillary thyroid cancer. Total thyroidectomy with central and right lateral node dissection was performed in a 53-year-old female patient for her papillary thyroid cancer. During right central node dissection at the 4th tracheal ring level, the recurrent laryngeal nerve was found as a direct branch from the vagus nerve across the common carotid artery at the posterior aspect and no any other vascular abnormality was found on the operative field. During thyroid surgery, a surgeon should be careful not to damage a nonrecurrrent laryngeal nerve that's found incidentally. (J Korean Surg Soc 2008;75:439-442) KCI Citation Count: 0 |
