DENSIFICATION BEHAVIOUR OF Y-TZP CONTAINING ZIRCONIUM DIBORIDE COMPOSITES

The densification behaviour of yttria-stabilised tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) composites containing zirconium diboride (up to 50 wt%) was studied. Samples were prepared by pressureless sintering in an argon atmosphere over the temperature range 1350-1550 C for 1 h holding time. The influence of ZrB2...

Summary:The densification behaviour of yttria-stabilised tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) composites containing zirconium diboride (up to 50 wt%) was studied. Samples were prepared by pressureless sintering in an argon atmosphere over the temperature range 1350-1550 C for 1 h holding time. The influence of ZrB2 addition in the Y-TZP matrix, as well as the sintering temperature, on the densification, phase stability and mechanical properties of sintered samples was studied. The findings showed that the tetragonal phase stability of the zirconia was affected by ZrB2 addition, with large amounts of the monoclinic phase formed after sintering. This, in turn, led to a decline in the relative density of the sintered samples as well as the mechanical properties.
