Summary: | Twenty-seven years after the 'Privacy Act 1993' (1993 Act) was enacted, the 'Privacy Act 2020' (2020 Act) has finally updated New Zealand's privacy law and brought it into the digital economy. The process was long and often delayed. The Law Commission undertook a five-year privacy project from 2006 to 2011. Its recommendations were mostly implemented in the Privacy Bill (Bill), which was introduced seven years later on 20 March 2018 by the Hon Andrew Little MP. The Bill passed its third reading on 24 June 2020. It comes into force on 1 December 2020. |
