Summary:The effect of a europium activator on the structural and luminescent properties of Sr1-xSi2O2N2:Eu2+x nano oxynitride phosphors was investigated. In order to achieve small spherical particles with smooth and round surfaces particles, the phosphors with various Eu2+ dopant contents were synthesised by solid state reaction at 800-1200 C for 6 h under a reducing nitrogen atmosphere containing 5% H2. The characteristics of the synthesised Sr1-xSi2O2N2:Eu2+x oxynitride phosphor were investigated by XRD, SEM, and photoluminescence. Both of the prepared phosphors consist of nanosized particles. The phosphors exhibited green to yellow emission spectra for near excitation. The influence of Eu2+ content on the crystal structure was studied. As the Eu2+ content increased, there was a shift in the continuous emission spectra. The material is a promising candidate for potential use as a fluorescent material in white light emitting diodes (W-LEDs).
