Summary:The importance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in small and open economies like Slovakia is indisputable. They belong to the major employers and their size makes them suitable for flexible functioning in an increasingly globalized market. There are a large number of financial and non-financial tools and instruments for the support of the research and development activities of SMEs. The Ministry of Economy of Slovak Republic implemented innovative voucher program to promote cooperation business entrepreneurs subjects and scientific-research institutes in the year 2014 and 2015. The article deals with methodology, form of the support and evaluates the results of the first two calls. The conclusion describes recommendations for future challenges or similar types of support programs.
