Summary:In the present study, Alumina/ Magnesia/ Zirconia/ Graphite (AMZG) refractory composite was fabricated and its physical, mechanical and chemical properties were investigated. The preparation of AMZG refractory composite was modeled andoptimized by using Central Composite Design (CCD). Among all factors, zirconia content (0-5 wt.%), magnesia content (0-10wt.%) and graphite size (fine and coarse grained) were selected. The factors were varied in 5 levels and the responses werefitted by quadratic regression model. Statistical data showed that the highest relative density, modulus of rupture and oxidationresistance were obtained by fine grained graphite at zirconia and magnesia of 3.312 wt.% and 4.075 wt.%, respectively. Quantitative analysis of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern by Rietveld method revealed that the optimal sample compositionincluded 44.2, 26.1, 10.3, 4.2 and 15.2 wt% of corundum, cordierite, spinel, zirconium oxide and graphite phases, respectively. The result of XRD is confirmed by Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA). The oxidation resistance (at 900 oC) of the bestspecimen was investigated. KCI Citation Count: 0
