Summary: | Autumn olive berries (AOB, Elaeagnus umbellata Thunb.) have been reported to show potential anti-obesity properties. Here, we evaluated the fat-reducing effects of AOB in C57BL/6J mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Reductions in epididymal fat and liver weight, as well as overall body weight were observed in the AOB-treated group compared with the HFD control. Specifically, observations of epididymal adipose tissues from obese mice showed that the size of lipid droplets was reduced in AOB-treated mice. Additionally, fat degeneration in the liver was observed in the HFD group compared with the normal diet group, but the extent of fat degeneration was reduced by AOB treatment. Furthermore, serum total cholesterol levels were lower in the AOB group than in the HFD control. Overall, this study demonstrated that AOB consumption can result in beneficial anti-obesity effects, including improvements in body weight, adipocyte size and area, and serum cholesterol levels.
