Summary:Sublimable iron(II) acetylacetonate and platinum(II) acetylacetonate were used to prepare Fe-Pt/C nanocatalysts for anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer and their morphology was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Their elemental ratio was analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray analyzer and the loading weight was measured by thermogravimetric analyzer. The surface area was measured by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis and the water absorption was measured by dynamic vapor sorption. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) image showed that Fe and Pt nanoparticles was well dispersed on the carbon black surface and their average particle size was 2.75 nm. The loading weight of Fe-Pt nanocatalysts on the carbon black was 5.96-7.32 wt%, and the value increased with increasing iron(II) acetylacetonate content. As the Fe-Pt loading weight increased, the specific surface area decreased significantly by more than 70.9%, because Fe-Pt nanoparticles block the micropores of carbon black. I-V characteristics showed that water electrolysis performance increased with increasing Pt nanocatalyst content.
