프리저 페이퍼를 활용한 퀼트 기법에 관한 연구 -연구자의 사례를 중심으로

퀼트는 천과 천 사이에 부드러운 솜이나 양털 혹은 다른 천 등의 속을 넣어 장식적인 바느질 기법을 활용해 꿰매는 것이다. 퀼트는 손만을 이용하는 손 퀼트(Hand quilt)와 재봉틀(Sewing machine)을 이용하는 기계 퀼트(Machine quilt)로 구분된다. 실용적으로 사용할 수 있는 재봉틀의 발명으로 퀼트의 제작이 기계화되면서 재봉틀에 의한 여러 기법들이 생겨나고 표현의 방법도 다양해지기 시작하였다. 그러나 작은 천 조각이나 곡선의 연결을 필요로 하고 원단을 덧붙이는 세밀화 된 작품 제작 과정에서 연결부위가 정확하지 않고 자연스럽지 못하며 줄어드는 현상의 문제점이 나타난다. 본 논문은 패치워크나 아플리케 과정에서 천의 조각을 연결할 때 발생하는 문제점을 해결하고, 프리저 페이퍼의 다양한 기법을 이용한 작품 제작연구에 그 목적이 있다. 먼저, 연구 방법은 국내외 문헌과 학술지, 논문, 인터넷 사이트 등을 통한 선행연구조사를 바탕으로 퀼트의 정의와 역사, 퀼트의 종류와 기법들에 대해 알아보았다. 다음으로 재봉틀을 이용한 기계 퀼트에 프리저 페이퍼를 활용함으로써 형태를 효율적이며 정확하게 표현할 수 있는 퀼트 기법으로 페이퍼 피싱, 픽처 피싱, 잉글리시 페이퍼 피싱, 아플리케, 인레이드 아플리케를 연구하였다. 이러한 연구를 통해 천에 프리저 페이퍼를 부착함으로써 불규칙한 패턴과 복잡한 직선이나 곡선, 뾰족하고 작은 조각들도 신속(간편(정확하게 연결할 수 있었으며, 늘어나거나 미끄러운 소재의 천을 연결할 경우에도 겉돌거나 밀리는 문제점을 해결할 수 있었다. 이에 본 연구는 프리저 페이퍼를 활용한 기법을 제시함으로써 퀼트 작가들의 작품 제작과 연구에 도움이 될 수 있음을 기대한다. A quilt is made by putting three layers of fabric, patchwork top, batting and backing, and quilting them together and sewing up the margin around. A quilt is classified into the hand quilt sewing only with hands and the machine quilt using sewing machine. As quilt products could be made using a sewing machine with the invention of sewing machine which was practical in making sewing products, a variety of techniques was created by sewing machine and the expression methods became diversified more and more. However, there was the problem which the patchworks were not accurately connected and didn`t look natural as well as a quilt was crumpled in the elaborate process sewing small patchworks together or round shapes and adding several layers of fabrics. This paper aims to solve the problems caused when sewing patchwork or applique pieces together and to produce the works using a variety of techniques with freezer paper. As the methodology, the definition, history, kinds and techniques of a quilt were investigated on the basis of the previous researches in Korea and foreign countries including literature, journals, theses and website. Furthermore, this paper analyzed paper piecing, picture piecing, English paper piecing, applique and inlaid applique as the quilt techniques, which can effectively and accurately express the shapes using the freezer paper in the machine quilt using a sewing machine. Through the analysis, irregular patterns, complicated lines or round shapes, angular and small pieces could be quickly, easily and accurately connected by attaching a freezer paper to fabric. Even elastic or smooth fabric was not floated or slipped from each other The analysis results of this paper will help a further study investigating the techniques of quilt artists by proposing the quilt techniques using freezer paper.
