플랑드르 회화의 언어적 비유와 알레고리적 해석에 관한 비평

본 논문은 언어적 비유를 통해 플랑드르 회화의 정점을 이루어낸 히에로니무스 보쉬와 피터 브뢰겔의 작품에 나타난 알레고리의 본질적인 의미와 해석에 관한 비평적 시각을 고찰하였다. 보쉬와 브뢰겔은 네덜란드의 견고한 전통을 기반으로 중세가 막을 내리고 새로운 종교개혁의 여명이 교차하는 정치적, 종교적, 사회적 변화 속에서 종교적 비유와 도덕적 풍자에 관한 알레고리를 화풍에 구축하였다. 따라서 이들이 시대적 관습과 종교적 주제, 선과 악의 이중구조에 따른 알레고리적 표현방식들을 작품 속에 어떻게 구현하였는지 시와 속담, 성서적 알레고리를 근거로 구체적으로 분석하고자 한다. 이에 15, 16세기 플랑드르 회화가 형성(발전하게 된 시대적 배경을 통해 미술의 사회적 특수성을 살펴보고 시대적 흐름에 따른 알레고리의 언어개념을 알아본다. 특히 20세기 초반 발터 벤야민이 현대적 의미로 재평가한 언어적 본질에 기초한 알레고리 이론에 주목하였다. 보쉬와 브뢰겔은 종교와 역사의 엄중한 교훈을 토대로 독창적인 비유적 어법과 비판적 시각으로 인간의 본성을 탐구함으로서 이들이 속한 당대 현실의 개혁정신을 일깨웠다. 보쉬와 브뢰겔이 이끌어낸 공통적인 주제와 내용, 알레고리적 특성들은 플랑드르 문화와 미술의 특수성에서 발견할 수 있는 상징적인 요소이자 그들의 예술론을 판단하는 진정한 기준인 것이다. 이는 시대와 역사를 관통하여 현대미술을 통찰하고 해석할 수 있는 매개의 역할 즉 방법론적인 틀을 제공할 수 있기에 매우 시사적이다. This thesis explores the meaning of allegory in Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel`s work. Bosch and Bruegel established a style of religious symbols and moral satire amidst the sociopolitical and religious changes. I aim to analyze how allegoric expressions were embodied within religious themes and the good and evil through poem, saying and biblical allegories. It looks into the social distinctiveness, linguistic concept of allegory of each time and allegory theory that Benjamin reinterpreted in the early 20c. They awakened revolutionary spirit exploring human nature through metaphoric language and critical perspective based on religious and historical lessons. The subject, contents and allegoric features that both of them had are symbolic elements of Flemish culture as well as the standard that defines their art. It is suggestive as a method that gives insight to contemporary art over time.
