패션 마스크에 나타난 캐릭터 이미지의 유형과 활용의미

본 연구는 패션에 나타난 캐릭터 타입의 마스크에 대한 카테고리와 활용의미를 분석하는 것이며, 연구 방법으로는 마스크 이론에 대한 최근 서적, 패션북, 그리고 인터넷 패션 웹사이트에 수록된 자료를 고찰하고 분석하는 것이다. 연구의 범위는 2005-2014년 동안 패션 컬렉션에 발표된 자료에서 총 145 점의 사진 자료를 대상으로 하였다. 본 연구의 결과로는 먼저 캐릭터 이미지를 가진 패션 마스크의 유형을 각각 유사인간 형태, 동물형태, 그리고 판타스틱 형태로 범주화되었다. 이를 토대로 패션 컬렉션에서의 사진 자료를 분석한 결과 먼저 유사인간 형태는 복면형으로 픽셀화 된 얼굴 프린팅, 반면형으로 단순화된 얼굴, 부드러운 연질 소재(고무)로 전면형의 사실적 얼굴, 복면형으로 얼굴기관 일부를 생략한 인형과 휴머노이드 로봇, 그리고 가발로 장식된 쇼윈도 마네킹 형태의 단순 얼굴 등의 특징을 보여주었다. 둘째, 동물 형태는 동물의 실제적 머리에 준한 형태성을 가진 것으로서 동물 머리의 일부분 및 내외부선을 중심으로 한 반면 및 전면형 타입이 주요하며, 이는 동물이 가진 상징적 의미와 계절성, 스토리텔링을 위한 것이 특징적이었다. 셋째, 판타스틱 형태는 얼굴이 아닌 기타 신체 기관의 표현, 식물 및 초자연적 소재의 표현, 신화 속 캐릭터의 새로운 응용, 일상적 오브젝트 또는 게임 캐릭터의 표현 그리고 얼굴전체를 덮는 기하학적, 추상적 표현 등으로 나타났다. 패션 컬렉션에서 캐릭터 마스크의 활용의미는 먼저 새로운 패션 콘셉트를 전달하는 의상에 대한 시각적 단서로서의 의미, 둘째, 인간의 얼굴을 대신하며 새로운 페르소나를 창출하고 패션을 하나의 예술화된 퍼포먼스화로서의 의미, 셋째, 캐릭터 마스크가 기존에 일반화된 상징적인 이미지의 재현에 그치는 것이 아니라 디자이너 고유의 패션 이미지를 표현하기 위해 관련 유형들을 새롭게 재해석함으로써 항상 새로운 것을 추구하는 대중들의 감성적 욕구와 결합하고 있다는 점에서 그 의미를 가지고 있다. This study analyzed the categories and applied meanings applied for character masks in fashion design. We also analyzed recent documentaries on mask theories, fashion books and internet fashion web sites. This study reviewed 145 fashion collection photos from 2005-2014. The results were: The character image types of masks were categorized as similar human form, animal form and fantastic form. In fashion collection, a similar human form is expressed in the pixel face printing of a full mask type, simple face features of half mask type, realistic face molding being made from soft rubber, a simple mannequin face with wig, humanoid robot of full mask type and doll with omitted face of full mask type. Animal form is expressed in the metaphoric meaning of an animal head of a half or full mask type and the seasonal animal image of a half or full mask type. A fantastic form is expressed in the exaggeration of a facial organ or other organ, application of plants or supernatural material, new creation of characters in myth, application of daily life objects or game character`s images and application of a geometric or abstractive object. The application meaning of character masks are the clarity a fashion concept or the creation of a new concept, the performance of blurring the boundary between art and fashion and the satisfaction of emotional needs like freedom, liberty and something new.
