이론적 대상으로서의 사진: 지표성에 관한 재고를 중심으로

본 연구는 지표성을 크라우스의 논의를 출발점으로, 1960, 70년대 현대 미술에서의 다양한 사진적 실천 속에서 고찰하며 지표의 새로운 측면들을 밝혀내고 지표의 개념을 의미작용, 매체 특정성 등의 논의와 연계하여 다루었다. 퍼스의 기호 이론에 기반한 기호로서의 지표는 사진 이론 논의에서 핵심적인 개념으로 남아있는데 크라우스는 지표의 재발견 이후 이를 70년대의 현대 미술을 설명하는 유용한 개념적인 틀로 상정하며 사진과 현대미술과의 관계성을 연구했다. 그녀의 지표에 관한 관심은 그린버그의 매체 특정성에 관한 논의를 반박하는 차원에서 출발했고 이에 관한 논의는 1990년대 이후 현대 이론가들이 푼크툼, 사진의 의미작용, 매체 특정성에 관한 새로운 고찰을 할 수 있는 풍부한 논의의 출발점을 제공했다. 그러나 다른 한편으로는 사진적 실천을 단순화하고 과도하게 편중시키는 오류를 드러내기도 했고 도상으로서의 사진 개념에 다가가 있는 디지털 시대의 현대 사진을 설명할 수 있는 충분한 도구가 되지 못한다. 본 논문은 지표에 관한 논의를 재해석하면서 지표의 새로운 차원인, 수행성, 대체되는 의미에 관한 분석과 지표의 논의를 벗어나는 푼크품과 매체 특정성에 관한 재논의를 통해 매체를 재정의하며 진화하는 사진의 특성과 이론적 대상으로서의 사진을 재고하는 기회를 제공하고자 했다. This study has observed the discussion of indexicality through diverse photographic practices in contemporary art of 1960s and 1970s, starting from the discussion of Rosalind Krauss and has discovered a new aspect of index and dealt the concept of index in association with signification, medium specificity and etc. Index, as a sign based on Peirce`s theory, remains a core concept in the discussion of photography theory and Krauss has studied the relationality of photography and contemporary art, considering the concept of index as a useful tool of explaining contemporary art of 1960s and 1970s. Although her interest of index had originated from the objection of Greenberg`s discussion of medium-specificity, but it has offered a starting point of abundant discussion of rethinking frame, punctum, signification, medium specificity. But on the other hand, it showed the mistake to simplify photographic practices and place too much emphasis on index and is not a enough tool to explain a contemporary photography in a digital environment which is related so much with the concept of photography as a icon. This study, through the reinvestigation of index by Krauss, has elaborated the expansion of the photographic, including diverse photographic practices and the evolving characteristics of photography which redefines a medium itself and offered to reconsider a photography as an object of theory.
