Summary:We performed a prospective study of factors about corneal endothelial damage associated with pars plana vitrectomy in 68 eyes of 68 patients. The corneal endothelium was examined with a non-contact specular microscope preoperatively and six months postoperatively. The mean endothelial cell loss for 68 eyes was 18.6%. By multiple regression analysis method, we found most influential factors to endothelial cell density were pars plana lensectomy and diabetes. But in the coefficient of variation and the hexago-nality of endothelium, we found no factors of statistical meaning after vit-rectomy. The 68 eyes were divided into four groups by these two factors and compared with each other but no significant relationship in them was found. These data suggest that pars plana vitrectomy results in significant endothelial cell loss when patients have diabetes or pars plana lensectomy was done(J Korean Ophthalmol Soc 41:2598~2602,2000).
