Summary:In this study, the effect of Al2O3 content on the physical, mechanical, thermal, and structural properties of sodium aluminosilicate glasses were investigated. Five glass compositions were synthesized by varying the [Al2O3]/[SiO2] molar ratio, and the mechanical properties before and after ion exchange were analyzed. As the Al2O3 content increased, the density, and vickers hardness of the glasses increased linearly due to the decrease in non-bridging oxygen and the densification of the glass network. Additionally, CS and DOL were measured to further assess the chemical strengthening properties. The glass transition temperature (Tg) also increased linearly. FT-IR spectra showed that the fraction of Q3 and Q4 units of [SiO4] tetrahedra increased which means the decrease of the amount of NBOs in glass network. These results demonstrate that Al2O3 plays an important role in improving the structural integrity and mechanical properties of alkali aluminosilicate glasses.
