Summary:This study aims to evaluate the structural safety of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Type-C independent tank of a medium range liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carrier developed by a Korean shipbuilder. The evaluation process followed the Det Norske Veritas rules and the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC code) in terms of allowable limit, applied loads, and load cases. A total of nine load cases were considered for ultimate limit state (ULS), accidental limit state (ALS), and hydrostatic pressure test (HPT) conditions. Thermal and mechanical loads were applied to most load cases. The analysis results revealed membrane stress exceeding allowable limits in stress concentration areas around the dome for ULS and HPT cases. This study provides foundational data for LCO2 tank design and supports the development of safer and more efficient LCO2 carriers.
