Summary:The purpose of this study was to examine the perception of the University students on jazz chants. Jazz chanting has been mostly utilized for elementary students and preschool students in Korea and there shown been positive results of Jazz chant for those students. However, Jazz chant hasn’t been used for the university students in EFL settings in Korea. Therefore, this study aims to apply Jazz chants for the university students and to investigate how the University students perceive Jazz chanting. The quantitative as well as qualitative methodologies were applied for this study. For the survey of the study, 157 students responded to the survey, and 9 out of those University students who took courses related to English pronunciation participated in the interview which was the main method of the qualitative study. The data were collected through the course of an academic semester. The results showed the students perceived Jazz chanting as an interesting, motivating activity which helped them increase their attention and memory span during the activity. In addition, the students reported that they had the perception of Jazz chanting as a useful activity which helped them learn English rhythm in particular and expressed a variety of emotions in English. The results of this study suggest that there is a need to develop Jazz chanting suitable for the advanced levels of adult students of the English language. KCI Citation Count: 0
