Summary: | With an extended concept of vocabulary as a critical determinant in communicative competence, vocabulary study is becoming increasingly important. The purpose of this study is to review and analyze articles on vocabulary in the journal of English Language & Literature Teaching published between 1995 and fall 2013. A total of 40 vocabulary-related papers were selected and investigated from various perspectives: 1) the historical trends in vocabulary research; 2) the main topic area; 3) the research participants’ level of proficiency; 4) the research methodology and instrumentation. The results show that many papers have been written on paper-based assessment and questionnaires, while few have been written on interviews, verbal reports, and open-ended questionnaires. Concerning topics, most articles are on experimental and literature studies such as assessment, contents analysis, and teaching and learning strategy. Many vocabulary researchers have utilized high school or university students as their research participants. As for research methodology, quantitative methods have been used far more than qualitative ones. This research will provide an overview of vocabulary research in Korea over the last 19 years. Finally, future suggestions for English vocabulary research and teaching and learning methods are discussed in light of a new qualitative-quantitative continuum model. KCI Citation Count: 6 |
