Abstract Guo Ju become one of the famous filial piety in China by the behavior which buried his son for his mother, with the idea that “I may give birth to another baby, but I cannot restore your mother to life again.” The formation and development of this story experience a long time. Those are praising it believe that it is always good to promote filial piety. Those are criticizing his behavior for four reasons. First, filial piety to parents is not in the food, but in accepting their will. Second Choosing between filial piety to parents and love for children. Third, having no male heir is the gravest of the three cardinal offences against filial piety. Fourth, doubt the sincerity of his behavior. This paper compares the praise and condemnation of Guo Ju's behavior in China, and in doing so, discusses the question of what is true filial piety.
AbstractList ｢郭巨埋兒｣는 어머니의 봉양을 위해 어린 아들을 땅에 묻으려 했던 郭巨의 孝行에 관한 이야기이다. 그는 “아들은 다시 얻을 수 있으나, 어머니는 다시 얻을 수 없다”라는 생각으로 이런 행동을 하였고, 이 이야기는 『孝子傳』의 단골 소재가 되어 수천 년간 전해져왔다. 郭巨의 孝行에 대해서는 贊反 양론이 줄곧 존재했다. 찬양하는 자들은 하늘도 감동한 곽거의 치사랑을 중시한 행동을 장려해야 한다고 여겼다. 반면 비난하는 자들은 첫째 부모에 대한 효는 음식에 있는 것이 아니라 그 뜻을 받아들이는 데 있다는 ‘養口體’와 ‘養志’의 우선 순위 문제, 둘째 부모에 대한 효와 자식에 대한 사랑 중 어느 것을 선택하느냐는 ‘孝’와 ‘慈’의 충돌 문제, 셋째 후손을 남기지 않은 가장 커다란 불효를 저질렀다는 ‘無後’ 문제, 그리고 그의 행동의 진정성에 관한 ‘誠心’ 문제 등을 들어 郭巨를 孝子의 班列에서 제외시켜야 한다고 주장하였다. 이 논문은 郭巨의 효행에 대한 칭송하는 의견과 비난하는 의견 등을 살펴보고, 이를 통해 진정한 효란 과연 무엇인가를 함께 고민해보고자 한다.
