Summary: | The objective of this research was to evaluate the performance of anaerobic/aerobic activated sludge (ANOAS) processes coupled with a high-rate filter (HRF) (filtration velocity 200 m/d) in treating textile wastewater along with the influence of mixed liquid suspended solid (MLSS) in the ANOAS reactor. The ANOAS processes consisted of four reactors (an anaerobic reactor, two selectors (anoxic or oxic), and an aerobic reactor), each with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 4 h. The influent characteristics were as follows: temperature 29.3±1.5℃, pH, 7.4±0.5, COD 464.0±57.4 mg/L, SS 276.6±33.8 mg/L, color 628.0±47.3 Pt-Co, total nitrogen (TN) 35.4±5.1 mg/L, and total phosphorus (TP) 5.7±2.1 mg/L. As a result, the efficiencies of both the HRF and the ANOAS processes in reducing COD and color from the textile wastewater increased with increasing MLSS. In the case of BOD, COD, and color removal, the efficiencies of the ANOAS processes at < 6000 mg/L were 70-88%, while at MLSS > 6000 mg/L, they were <20%. In the case of TN and TP removal, the efficiencies of the ANOAS processes at < MLSS 6000 mg/L were < 55% and < 65%, respectively, while at > MLSS 6000 mg/L, they were 55% and 20%, respectively. Based on the above results, the performance efficiency of the ANOAS coupled with HRF bed as a pretreatment process achieved a higher efficiencies at less than 6000 mg/L in MLSS. In order to enhance removal efficiencies and low sludge production, the filtration velocity of < 200 m/d for HRF bed and the MLSS of < 6000 mg/L in ANOAS processes are needed. KCI Citation Count: 0 |
