Summary:The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parents' child-rearing attitudes perceived by elementary school children on children's loneliness. The subjects of this study were a total of 416 elementary school children in the sixth grade who were randomly selected: 201 in Gwangju City(for a urban area) and 215 in Jeonnam(for a rural area). First, in parents' child-rearing attitudes influencing children's loneliness, two of four sub-factors(affection-refusal and autonomy-heteronomy) were statistically significant. As children perceived their parents' child-rearing attitudes refused and heteronomous, their loneliness became bigger. Second, parents' child-rearing attitudes by sex showed significant difference. While male students perceived that their fathers' parenting was achievement-oriented and open-hearted, female students did that their fathers' parenting was non-achievement-oriented and closed. Furthermore, male students' perception was higher in their mothers' openness parenting rather than closeness, compared to female students. When fathers were college or elementary school graduates, their children's perception was higher in achievement parenting. Finally, the effects of parents' academic background and economic standard on their children's loneliness were significantly different. As parents' academic backgrounds were low, their children's perception became bigger in loneliness. Furthermore, as parents' economic standard was low, their children's perception became bigger in loneliness. KCI Citation Count: 12
