Summary:The object of this study examined the effects of self-selected music listening on the depression and sleep quality of adult breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. This study’s subjects were 58 breast cancer patients aged 30 to 50 undergoing chemotherapy (second cycle or more) at Hospice Care and at the internal medicine wards of “S” hospital located in Gyeongsangbukdo Province. Participants selected their favorite music, which was provided to them twice a week (30 minutes/session, 8 times). The music’s effect was measured using the Self Depression Scale (SDS) and Verran and Snyder-Halpern (VSH) questionnaires. Group differences were determined by measuring depression and sleep quality before and after the first, fourth and eighth sessions. For homogeneity analysis, a Chi-square test was carried out using SPSS 17.0, 1, and Repeated Measure ANOVA was utilized to analyze differences in depression and sleep quality before and after the fourth and eighth sessions, before the first session, and after the first, fourth and eighth sessions. As to result that I study for the total 8sessions, the significant differences were found for depression in pre and pro tests (p<.001), and the same went for sleep quality (p<.001), and sleeping hours increased as the program number increased. Therefore, the self-selected music listening has positive effects on the depression and sleep quality of breast cancer inpatients undergoing chemotherapy. The self-selected music therapy program configuration where utilize the preferred music will be necessary.
