Summary: | Tribochemistry concerns interacting chemical reactions and wear processes. Tribochemical wear is the most complex type of wear. Chemical processes, due to active agents in the process fluid and/or the surrounding atmosphere, belong to the chemical corrosion domain. The friction couple is submitted simultaneously to mechanical action and chemical action. Mechanical action arises due to abrasive movements of the couple elements under the action of the applied forces. Chemical action results from the active substances in the environment and in the process fluid. All these elements are components of the tribosystem (see Ch. 2 "Tribosystems of Abrasive Machining Processes"). Corrosion wear is manifested by formation of reaction products as a result of chemical interactions between the elements of a tribosystem by tribological action. When resting from mechanical action, interaction between the couple and other elements of the tribosystem is limited to chemical corrosion. In the following sections, the prefix tribo is used to denote the special nature of a mechanical, physical, and chemical process when subject to intense surface deformation in abrasive contact. (Example workpiece materials include steels and ceramics.) |
