Summary: | A round 1900, when the term ‘living pictures’ (or ‘lebende Bilder’ in German-speaking countries) was used, it most likely referred either to the new phenomenon of cinematograph shows or to the older but still persisting tradition oftableaux vivants. Apparently, the term expressed in both cases that there was something in the pictures that made them alive: in film the life-like movement of images, intableaux vivantsthe physical presence of actors emulating a painting.
