Summary: | As I argue inIraqi Arab Nationalism: Authoritarian, Totalitarian and Pro-Fascist Inclinations,1932–1941, which examines authoritarian, totalitarian, and pro-Fascist trends in Iraq during the 1930s and early 1940s, the Iraqi nationalist press cast youth in the role of reviving the strength of the Arab nation. Most of this debate on youth took place in Baghdad-based Arab nationalist newspapers during the second half of the 1930s. The debate was predominantly about masculinity under threat by effeminization through the temptations of a Western lifestyle. The debate reflected a broad generational conflict inside the growing politicized middle class of Iraqi urban society. |
