Summary:The patient was a 14-year-old woman who complained of continuous left upper flank pain and was diagnosed with a tumor of the spleen. Her pain worsened with increase in the size of the tumor. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed ill-defined and heterogeneous tumor on the upper side of the spleen. CT scan showed a low-density area indicating a protruding tumor. The tumor was uniformly stained in the contrast enhanced CT image. CT angiography revealed a vascularized tumor. The tumor was 5 cm in diameter. MRI showed iso to low intensity areas on the T1-weighted image and high intensity areas on the T2-weighted image. We diagnosed the tumor as splenic hemangioma with threatened rupture and performed laparoscopic splenectomy. The resected specimen revealed a solid tumor protruding from the splenic surface. The pathological diagnosis was cord capillary hemangioma that was included in hamartoma of the red pulp type. Laparoscopic splenectomy is a feasible and safe procedure even in cases with threatened rupture tumor.
