Summary: | The purpose of this study was to focus on the internal process from image to movement in the “expression of becoming something,” and to clarify the differences and characteristics in the internal process when a formulaic physical expression and a personalized physical expression are expressed. In this study, we conducted an experiment in which 5-year-old children(5 or 6 years old)freely expressed their bodies using onomatopoeia as a subject. 65 physical expressions were obtained from 13 subjects. 46 “becoming something” expressions were extracted out of the 65 physical expressions(70.8%). Of the 46 expressions, 17 were judged to personalized physical expressions, 19 were formulaic physical expressions, and 10 were indescribable physical expressions. In this study, the internal process from image to movement when young children “expression of becoming something” with a subject matter includes the following four phase from image to movement. The four phases are “the phase of evoking the image,” “the phase of capturing the image,” “the phase of incorporating the characteristics of the image into physical movements,” and “the phase of how to execute the incorporated movements.” Each of these phases was considered to influence whether a formulaic physical expression or a personalized physical expression would emerge. Furthermore, it was considered important to move back and forth between the three dimensions of “self” as subject, “self” as object, and “self” overlapping with others in order to represent the image in the “expression of becoming something” to express personalized physical expression.
