Summary:By virtue of the advancements in science and technology, hepatic resection and other related areas have seen remarkableinnovations. Among them, technical and instrumental improvements in laparoscopic hepatic resection are major topics ofinterest. This progress may lead to laparoscopic hepatectomy being regarded as the standard procedure for hepatic resection.Other important innovations include advances in preoperative simulation methods, the development and clinical applicationof navigation systems in hepatic resection, the intraoperative use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound, and the development ofthe associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy technique for two-stage extended hepatectomy.Additionally, on the basis of a Japanese nationwide survey, the liver transplantation criteria for hepatocellular carcinoma has beenexpanded. Regarding medical treatment, the major point is the development of molecular target drugs and immune checkpointinhibitors that may also influence surgical treatment. In the near future, the development of genomic medicine will enable theestablishment of novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.
