Summary: | The enhanced recovery after surgery(ERAS)program suggests that perioperative nutritional care can inhibit catabolism and improve insulin resistance. However, the administration of nutrient substrates during surgery is not mentioned in the ERAS program. Previous studies have demonstrated the inhibition of catabolism by the administration of glucose or amino acids under general anesthesia. On the other hand, hyperglycemia resulting from administration of nutrient substrates is known to contribute to postoperative complications. We here explain the problems with intraoperative nutrition as well as its potential. |
