Summary:Fifteen cases of parapharyngeal space tumors were evaluated between 1981 and 1990. Eleven cases involve tumors affecting the salivary gland (6 pleomorphic adenomas, 2 mucoepidermoid carcinomas, 1 adenocarcinoma, 1 adenoid cystic carcinoma, and 1 poorly differentiated carcinoma). Two cases are neurogenic and 1 is of unknown etiology. Our experience has shown that, among the three accepted approaches to excision of parapharyngeal tumors, each is appropriate to a specific type of the tumor. In the case of a dumbbell tumor, the transparotid approach yields the best results. In benign tumors located on the median side of a carotid artery, the intraoral approach should be used. In other manifestations of such tumors, a transcervical approach is recommended.
