Summary:Asanuma Shokai was founded in 1871 by Tokichi Asanuma as a photographic supplies store and will celebrate its 153rd anniversary in 2024 as the oldest photographic supplies store in Japan. Asanuma Shokai was the first company in Japan to use the term “photo size” and the first company in Japan to manufacture dry plates, the Tokyo Dry Plate Company, which played an important role in the early days of the Japanese photographic industry. Here we look back at the history of Asanuma Shokai, focusing on the period that coincided with the founding of the company.
