Summary: | Case 1: A 55-year-old woman complained of indurated swelling in the higher part of the neck after six months of a supraglottectomy. We have considered at that time, that the tumor might be recurrence of cancer. However, the histological examination revealed actinomycosis. Ampicillin potasium 10 million I. U. was administered daily intramusculary for 30 days and 2.0 gm of ampicillin and cloxacillin a day orally for three months. Case 2: A 67-year-old woman had an indolent and indurated swelling with slight pain in the left submandibular region in three weeks after extraction of a tooth in the same side. Clinically the patient was diagnosed as an actinomycosis and the nodule was removed including the wall of abscess. Under pathological examination actinomyces granules were confirmed and then penicillin therapy (intravenously 5 million I. U. for 13 days following oral administration of 2.0 gm of penicillin for three months) was carried out. Case 3: A 50-year-old-m an, the typical symptoms of actinomycosis were observed in his left submandibular region. In this case, intravenous injection of penicillin 5 million I. U. per day for 15 days was performed before surgery. The operation was performed after the decrease of the indurated swelling. The diagnosis of actinomycosis was confirmed from culture under bacteriological examination. The patient was administered penicillin 2.0 gm a day for three months. There was no evidence of recurrence aft er the treatments in three cases up to day. From these experiences, it will be emphasized that surgical procedure should be done after administration of penicillin when actinomycosis is clinically evident. |
