Summary:A 71-years-old man complained of the swelling and pain of the tongue for the last 4 years. The movement of the tongue was disturbed by an infiltrated tumor. The surface of this tumor was irregular, and easily bled. The tumor was diagnosed as verrucous carcinoma. It was inverted into muscle layer and had many microabscesses. Chemotherapy was given intravenously with a total dose 180 mg of peplomycin. As a result, the tumor was reduced and become softer. Two months later, however, the tumor recurred and gradually increased dysphagia gradually. The patient was died of cachexy 14 months since the first treatment. Postmortem examination gave no evidence of metastasis. Seventeen cases of verrucous carcinoma of the oral cavity, reported in Japanese literature, were reviewed.
