Summary:Objective: We developed a linguistically validated Japanese version of the modRDOS-4 as an objective rating scale for dyspnea that can be used in home care and institutional settings. Methods: After receiving permission from the original developer to develop a Japanese version modRDOS-4,we developed it in accordance with general procedures used when creating linguistically validated translated versions of scale. Results:Three native Japanese translators translated the text into Japanese (forward translation), and then native English translators back-translated the Japanese draft. We and the original developer reviewed the original version and the Japanese draft for consistency with the original concept and created a provisional version. After an ethics review, an implementation survey was conducted using the provisional version. Based on the interview results, a cognitive debriefing was conducted, and we finalized the content of the Japanese version of the modRDOS-4.Discussion: We need to conduct a psychometric study on Japanese subjects in the future.
