Summary:An edited version of a document by C. A. Doxiadis extracted from Ekistics--An Introduction to the Science of Human Settlements is presented. Here, the science of ekistics is discussed. The goal of ekistics as a prescriptive science is to assist man in being happy and safe within his settlements by creating conditions of balance between the elements of the settlements, so that he can adapt himself easily to the requirements imposed by the settlement as a whole, and in a way that will help him develop according to his own intentions.
