Summary:EDUCATION HAS A crucial role to play in preparing the next generation for participation in inclusive communities. To perform that role, universities must grapple with major challenges to their viability in an era when educational resources are offered over the Internet virtually free. In interestingly analogous ways, Japanese and American institutions prove how fundamental those challenges are. Only if the core requirements of sufficient funding and well-prepared students in adequate numbers are available can universities in even the wealthiest countries execute this task of educating the next generation of leaders. It is therefore worth examining the prospects for such institutions
